How to choose and apply the best concealer for your skin type

Finding a good concealer is vital for achieving a flawless makeup application. A good concealer will cover any blemishes and skin discolouration, it will also work well alongside your foundation, offering the appearance of an even skin tone. Whilst a badly chosen or applied concealer will only draw attention to the problem areas, making blemishes appear more obvious.

Concealers are one of the most misused makeup items and one of the most common mistakes is not using the correct shade. However, once you have the right shade of concealer and learn some simple application techniques, you can achieve a flawless look to your skin.

How to Choose a Concealer

Some of these makeup tips might sound a little obvious, but it is surprising how often people use the wrong concealer. You should always choose a concealer based on your skin type, matching the colour of your foundation exactly. Avoid choosing concealer shades that are pink, rose, peach, white, yellow, or copper as they could show through your foundation, which creates an unnatural looking appearance. Concealer should be used in the areas of your face that you want to highlight.

For minor skin discolourations, a light to medium coverage concealer will work well. For makeup under the eyes, select a shade of concealer that's no more than one or two shades lighter than your natural skin tone. If you have dry skin, don't choose a liquid concealer with a matte finish because that will emphasise the dryness. If you have oily skin with enlarged pores, don't go for a cream or stick concealer as they tend to clog up pores and add an oily shine. If you are trying to cover dark undereye areas, choose a concealer with a reflective finish, as this will help disguise darker areas.

  • Cream Concealer - Cream concealer is the best choice for normal, dry, combination, or sensitive skin. Coverage ranges from medium to full. Finishes include satin and creamy.
  • Liquid Concealer - You should choose a liquid concealer for normal, combination, oily, sensitive, and breakout-prone skin. Coverage ranges from light to full. Finishes include dewy, satin, radiant, shimmer, and matte.
  • Stick Concealer - Stick concealers are best for normal, dry, and sensitive skin. Coverage ranges from medium to full. Finishes include satin and powdery matte.

How to Apply Concealer

Regardless of the type of concealer you've chosen, concealer application makeup techniques generally remain the same. It doesn’t matter what skin type you have, it is important to prepare your face and around the eyes with a very light layer of moisturiser or skin primer.

If you are using a powder foundation, you should apply your concealer first, otherwise, it’s a matter of personal preference. Dab the concealer onto any skin discolourations or imperfections using a clean finger, brush or sponge. Then gently blend out the concealer until there are no demarcation lines between your concealer and your skin. You can set the concealer by applying some pressed powder. Matte finish concealer doesn’t need to be set, otherwise, it may feel too dry.

Never rub concealer in around the eyes as this skin is easily damaged. You should dab the concealer with a clean fingertip or brush in order to blend it. This method of dabbing and blending concealer will also give you more coverage than rubbing it in. If you are using a liquid concealer, try drawing a triangle under the base of your eye, aiming the point downwards toward your cheek. When you blend the concealer triangle, it will create an optical illusion that better hides dark circles.

Whether you're going for a full-face of base concealer, or just want to cover any skin imperfections, concealer really is a makeup godsend, but only when properly applied! Of course, it wouldn’t hurt to have an experienced makeup artist in Essex show you concealer application techniques, you can then adapt to suit.
